R.I.P Ted
Ted's Last Stand was the name Audrey created for our small farm in rural Virginia. When we arrived at our newly purchased farm, after an exhausting cross-country trip from California, we were dismayed by the amount of work the place needed. But this was offset by our delight in discovering that the previous owners had left their chickens -- one white rooster, and one white hen. Audrey immediately named them Ted and Bev (they were just such a cute little couple). Bev would fly up into the large holly tree at night, and Ted would settle in on the front porch. During the day they wandered the property, eating bugs, taking dust baths, Bev laying her eggs in the window box. Sadly their idealic life was cut short by Ted's untimely demise. Death by fox we assume. Three weeks after our arrival we found a scattered trail of feathers heading in the direction of the woods. Ted was a true southern gentleman and it was a natural choice for us, when deciding upon a name for our farm, to memorialize him. Since the naming of the farm, Ted's Last Stand has also become the name of our cut flower business. We sell at local farmer's markets and by special order. All of our flowers are field grown without environmentally harmful pesticides or herbicides.
While Ted and Bev are no longer with us, we do have Ted Junior, Lucy, and Louise -- the offspring that Bev hatched out in our window box. While T.J. is not quite as people friendly as his dad (We used to hand feed grapes to Ted), he is just as much of a gentleman. He looks after the girls and would never lower himself to attack the poor defenseless people who feed him. Unlike Franklin... but that's another story...
